What a fantastic pair of books! These two works from Alastair tell the story of his 4 year trip around the world, mainly by bicycle but also including stretches of ocean sailing (no flying between continents here!), canoeing down the Yukon River and passages on commercial ships. On the bike Alaistar travels through desert, through countries on the brink of war and through the icy grip of a Siberian winter.
Oh, and did I mention that having set off with a plan to travel East to Sydney, terrorists reduced the twin towers to rubble and made the Middle East a no go area for a westerner on a bicycle. So with a bike loaded with woolies for a winter ride across Asia and maps of the Middle East, he set off from Istanbul and headed South to Cape Town...
Whereas some books of this type are merely an entertaining read, these from Alastair really are truly inspirational. You find yourself willing him on - through Columbia when all advise says that it's a bad idea - down rapids on the Yukon River through forest fires - shoving his bike through sandstorms in the Sahara desert - the brutally honest descriptions of depression and loneliness in the first months. The writing is personal, honest and flows beautifully - you really feel like you are perched on the back of his panniers throughout the trip.
What more can I say: GO AND BUY THESE BOOKS!
